Mary shivered. Despite the warm golden light of a summer evening she felt her skin prickle as if she had stepped into a freezer. The streets of Milbrook were deserted. She walked down the centre of the road with Bill a dozen steps behind her. He had stopped to try the door of a car parked up at the side of the road. It was locked.

“No use anyway, I can’t hotwire the damn thing.”

Mary kept walking, scanning the horizon. The buildings around were tatty garages and closed offices. A convenience store was boarded up.

“Shit” cried Bill.

Mary span around to see a dark form splinter the horizon. The shape of a human, towering over the low skyline of trees and buildings. She was huge. This was Mary’s first time seeing a giant and she almost cried out as her knees buckled. Her heart felt like it was going to break through her ribcage. She felt a hand grab her.

“We have to run.” Said Bill, almost in a whisper.

They both began sprinting down the street. They had to find cover, they had to hide. Mary glanced at the boarded up shops and offices. They needed a quick in. They could try and break down a door but they needed to get undercover quickly. Everywhere was shut up.

“She’s coming!” screamed Bill.

Mary span her head around. She was young, maybe only a year or two older than herself. She was pretty. They had been spotted. She was looking directly at them. Even at this distance she could see the leer on the woman’s face.

They sprinted. On Mary’s left there was an open gate to a lot with a tatty building. A workshop. A footfall thudded behind her. The shutters were open. Thud, again, louder. Lungs burning, Mary threw herself through the doors and into the dark space. Bill was at her side. They each grabbed a shutter and tried to push them shut, but they were heavy, and sticky with rust, and screamed in protest. Then there was a stillness. She was already there. The ground complained under gigantic feet as her enormous weight compresses asphalt and concrete. A neighbouring brick building groaned and collapsed as her knee dropped on top of it. Mary and Bill held each other as they backed into the empty workshop. There was nowhere to run. They were trapped like rats. Even if they had shut the doors she could have ripped the roof off.

Like a white elephant, a hand appeared at the doors, filling the opening. It crossed the threshold slowly, fingers splayed, feeling blindly, clutching. There was no way out.
